Summer is a great season for both dog and owner.Walking conditions are perfect during the warm mornings and dusky evenings. What could be better than a brisk morning walk or gentle evening stroll with your dog?The fresh air and exercise is good for your health and your dog will love you for accompanying him on his daily walk. But there are a few dangers around during the summer months that every dog owner should be aware of.
BBQs
A BBQ is often the highlight of the summer. Whilst enjoying the outdoors many of us allow our dogs to roam free with us in the garden. But do you realise that by allowing your dog to roam free around a BBQ you could be putting it in a dangerous situation?A dog will not realise that the BBQ is hot, possibly until it is too late. A lively dog could easily run into the BBQ, causing injury or burns. Also, you need to be aware that human food might taste good to a dog, but it isn’t necessarily good for it.You might think is ok to feed your dog a sausage, burger or pork chop but these meats are really not good for him, no matter how much he loves the taste. However, such greasy food offers little nutritional value and will only result in your dog becoming a fussy eater; one who expects to be fed from your plate.Just make sure he has a full bowl of his favourite dog food close at hand – that should help to keep him happy. Small bones are also a huge problem, so don’t let your dog anywhere near chicken wings, drumsticks or pork chops.
Supply lots of fresh water
Water is an essential part of any dogs daily feeding routineIt becomes even more important when the outside temperature rises.Ideally, keep a bowl full of water close to your dogs feeding station and make sure it is full throughout the day. Always take water with you if you are going on a long trip with the dog.Your dog will be grateful of the drink!
Dogs in Cars
Throughout the year you should never leave your dog locked in a car for more than a few minutes. This becomes even more important when the weather is hot.The inside of the car can rapidly overheat, causing dehydration and even death.
Animal Friendly Sun Screen
Just like us, dogs can suffer from sunburn.Did you know that you can now buy sunscreen for your dog, which is great for the times you know he will be outside in the sunshine for prolonged lengths of time. Pay close attention to those areas with little fur coverage, such as the nose and ears.
